I was wondering exactly this the other day when I was playing. Certainly the brothers wouldn't have taken those pages intentionally before being trapped? I know some of this contradicts the Myst lore described in other places, but I don't see how the pages would end up where they did otherwise. Perhaps Atrus kept a Myst linking book in the fireplace beside the D'ni book specifically for use when traveling there and the brothers sabotaged it at the time they destroyed the rest of his library, hiding the page and each keeping half of the instructions for opening the vault. I posit that like the ones you visit in Myst, most Ages have Myst linking books, except the one at D'ni (for reasons explained in Riven). So when was the white page from the Myst linking book stolen and hidden in the vault? While this suggests he might have already suspected a trap on his way to D'ni, it could also be that he just wanted things to be ready in case Catherine returned to Myst before he completed his investigation. The placement of the pages, usually in the brother's "lairs" makes me think Atrus put them in places where Catherine would have to see evidence of their treachery in order to collect them, making it less likely that she would believe their lies, with the final pages near his D'ni book. The brothers, trapped within the books, are aware that the missing pages are distributed through the various Ages with a final page behind the fireplace (and where to find the code), suggesting that they saw the pages being torn out and distributed - that Atrus carried the books with him and tore out the pages as he went. Further, this message reveals he has just returned to Myst, discovered his library burned, and relocated the remaining books to the "places of protection", though he has not yet located the brothers. Atrus assumes Catherine will be the next one to return to Myst, based on the message left in the Viewer, and the letter on the stone. Some of the events within Myst suggest a very specific timeline: I've read lore that says the brothers trapped Atrus at D'ni and THEN fell victim to the Red and Blue books, but that requires a much more fantastical explanation of how the pages ended up where they did. Here are my thoughts, though I'm open to information that contradicts what I've surmised. The question of WHY and HOW the pages ended up where they were is something that was on my mind after finishing the game. Is it ever explained how the Red and Blue pages come to be distributed throughout the Ages? (It doesn't appear to be definitively addressed within the game itself, but I understand there are Myst novels.)
