The Honda has the option to switch between full automatic or the five-speed shifting option through use of its dual-clutch transmission. By moving this lever, you can switch to high or low gearing, and it still allows you shift through all five standard gears or reverse. Honda’s Rubicon model comes with a subtransmission that offers a low-range option.

Honda’s much-needed electronic power steering comes standard on the EPS Deluxe version. The Rubicon boasts 9.4 inches of ground clearance, and with no straight axle, it hits fewer trail obstacles while traversing rough terrain.

This is a huge improvement over the old solid-axle design. The rear is now equipped with independent dual A-arms that have 8.46 inches of travel. The gear selector is simple to switch between all gears (P/R/N/L/H), and while riding, there is no shifting required.įlash-forward to present time and things have changed in a big way for both machines! The 2017 Honda Foreman Rubicon 500 EPS Deluxe now comes standard with independent double-wishbone front suspension that has 7.28 inches of travel in the front. Polaris’s tried-and-true automatic PVT transmission is the hallmark of the Sportsman lineup. Known issues with the older Sportsmen were the top-heavy feeling, breaking belts and a tall seat position. With its MacPherson struts and IRS rear end, the Sportsmen have always had an unforgettable suspension feel. Polaris riders were enthralled with the ride quality, engine braking and power of the Sportsman lineup. At the same time, Honda was known for a stiffer ride coming from a solid-axle rear end. Most Rubicon riders loved Honda’s bulletproof engine design, strong five-speed transmission and polished ergonomics. It’s noticeable when you drive back to back that the Polaris is more powerful.Īt one time there were distinct buyers for these quads. The Polaris’ 567cc, ProStar, single-cylinder engine produces 44 horsepower, while Honda’s 475cc, longitudinally mounted, single-cylinder engine produces 28 horsepower. There is a big horsepower difference between these two. Particularly, the Polaris Sportsman line and Honda Foreman Rubicon are two of the best-selling machines available, and they have been for close to 20 years. Honda and Polaris are both staples in the 4×4 ATV world and have some of the best quads on the market with some of the best technology and comfort you can ask for.

On a big plus the Commander got a big boost in power. When you think of 4×4 quads, what companies come to mind? For a lot of us, Honda and Polaris immediately pop in our heads. The Maverick XMR is now over $26k(cdn) for the same model as last year aside from the fancy Plastic and Trail friendly tires. Prices also went up a bit this year on some models while others stayed very close. On a positive note the new Carbon and Yellow looks nice, and I love Viper Red, but there is wayyy too much red on the 850XMR with those painted bumpers in red also. That's my rant, and yes I'm bias because I'm a mud rider. for the rest of us many sets of these will be for sale on the internet lol.Īlso when Polaris is offering the Outlaw 2 as a factory tire and your offering the Cryptid tire this is not a good comparison if you took the two out of a showroom floor and put them in a side by side mud race. So basically for all those who buy an XMR for the look of an XMR but ride trail 100% of the time they will be very pleased with this change. The 570/650 is now coming with Mega Mayhems. I honestly believe for a pure mud bike this is a step down in capability but a step up in rider comfort. I noticed that BRP has switched to ITP tires on all of its premium ATV & SSV offerings. The feedback I get on the Outback max is they ride really well and wear like Iron but they plug up pretty easy in Mud.
